Old, old school!

This is a terrible video from the late 70's, you can blame the beauty company Lush for its apperance today. I was downtown when I came across 2 girls and a bunch of guys doing a choreographed routine to this song. At first I thought it was the worst flash mob ever, but it turns out it was promotion for a new shower gel call "it's raining men". I did get a full sized sample!

Now this is a much better version, but only because it's paying homage to 80's dance flicks. I do have to point out that the dancer at the begining is certainly not Geri Halliwell herself. Both of these videos actually show unhealthy extremes in body image. The original contains to ladies that are going to die young and have a lower quality of life due to the extent of their obesity. Geri Halliwell on the other hand looks disturbingly skinny, especially compared to her former weight. Besides the constant obsession it takes to maintain that kind of body on a person who's not natureally skinny, all sorts of problems come with being underweight. She also makes her self a complete FASO in this video.

Ha ha ha ha, it looks like this band has combined the 2 major musical movements in the '90s; heroine chic grunge and pretty boy, boy bands! Besides the fact that seeing both these guys mak-ing out with random girls is gross, this video was cheaply done, and it looks it. It's funny how they have a well known guest artist on this song, but it seems like they are trying to hide her in the video. Really I find this whole video odd, it doesn't flow well, the colour is wrong, the styling and make up are badly done too.

Can I Have You Stop Singing?

FASO alert! Ahhh JRDN besides being able to text your name quickly I'm not seeing a lot of point to your career or this video, though it looks like you could easily make the leap to porn; he's getting a lot of practice getting it on, on camera. Intrestingly enough "having it all" only applys to purchasable goods. Respect? Fidelity? Not being objectified and made to look like a gold digger? Sorry baby, that's not the way he rolls...

Irresponsible

I just watched this video for the first time and I am mad!

In a song that is supposed to be talking about abusive relationships, why do they insist on making such look so sexy and appealing. It's irresponsible. Talk is cheap, actions speak louder than words. Theses are not mindless phrases but truths. Putting 2 average people and shooting it straight with out the sexy editing would make it more responsible. All they are showing the kids (and that's the main market for these videos); is that if you want a passionate relationship you have to expect a little bit of abuse. And it is not okay for a girl to hit a guy either. If you use violence as a way of dealing with your emotions, you're going to get it in return, regardless of your gender.

I like throwing the paint!

All these pop bands sound and look the same, even their videos. I know you people want to make money but really, don't you ever get bored of the cookie cutter? They always like to use the newest technology and this year has been big on the "still". Taking a shot frozen but being able to move around it. It's a cool visual trick and is great for music videos where you have a short time and want to keep the movement yet at the same time can imbibe it with a sense of stillness. It just tends to be used for the same thing. Emotional, overwrought power ballads. This video is not terrible, just not original or memorable. I think I'm going to start keeping track of videos with pianos in them and what percent will at some point involve a woman draped over it.... In this video I have to wonder about the dirty bandages on his hands; where the rest of the band is and what's with the sudden switch to bright coloured shirts? Oh there's some of the band, you'll notice in music videos women always play the strings. I guess those are girlie instruments and are okay by the largely male dominated music industry. It's still going....

Year End List!

It's the last day of the year and so let's all jump on the band wagon! Here's my list of....

THE TOP 5 VIDEOS I WISH I HAD NEVER SEEN!
(aka I'll never get that time back/ my eyes are bleeding)

In no particular order....

1. Katy Perry California Girls
Making yourself FASO is not okay. The song is silly and shooting whipped cream from your bra is lame and tacky.

2. Lady Gaga Alejandro
Odd and Boring, now that's talent! The song is a super lame rip off of Maddona's La Lisa Bonita.

3. Faber Drive The Payoff
Oh look another pop punk band railing against "the man". Gee I wonder what happen to all the original punks? Like the original hippies they are now the man. It's called the circle of life little boys.

4. Katy Perry Teenage Dreams
Oh, how old are you again Katy; 26? Yes selling a unrealistic and ridiculous fantasy back to teenagers. No teenager looks like that, and being 16 and behaving like that is a bad idea. Kids be kids as long as you can! You only get to do it once. Being an adult is not far behind and lasts the rest of your life.

5. Enirque Iglesias I like it
Really, as soon as I saw those kids from the Jersey Shore I stopped watching.

I was going to make this a top 10 list, but I go bored. Lucky for Katy Perry!

Bored!

Overwrought song, and overspent on lame-o video. Oh look at the tough guys coming! Ha ha everyone is so pretentious, especially with the break in the song to play out the badly scripted Drama. None of these people look at all convincing in their roles, and certainly not tough. They are all a bunch of kids? Maybe this is the High School cafeteria on a fancy dress up day?  Ah good old Canadians, we used to make good videos. The best part is when a girl sitting at one of the tables half-heartedly hands the hero a bottle. I've always wanted to get one of those special break away glass bottles and give it a try..... now that would be a great Christmas present!

Not again...

I have never seen this video. I don't have to; I've seen enough clips over the year to know it is bad. I can't believe she is going the bad girl route. Seriously! Can you be even more cliche Miley! Did someone tell you if you become a cliche of a cliche it makes it cool again? This is not reverse psychology honey. This is lameness. I'm going to guess... reveling clothing? Scandalous dance moves? Implied lesbianism? I'm sure it's all there. Girls, don't try this at home. It's lame.

I object to objectification Gaga.

Telephone is a fantastic song, and there are so many great things about this video, the style, the look of it, the element of ridiculous and my two favorite, the editing and GREAT choreography. But I can not over look the purposeful melding of sex and violence and the objectification of women. Objectifying women is the same thing when it is done by a woman. It is distasteful and not helpful to women anywhere. All she is reinforcing is ridiculous body image and the necessity of women to be sexy to be of value. Not to mention the implied violence and the lesbianism which is just there to titillate and does nothing positive and supportive in that area either.

Sorry Gaga, but besides some fun music and some entertaining outfits you are doing nothing to leave a positive impact in this world. You can talk all you want but with actions like these, your words are lost.

Uhhhhhh okay...

This video is the reason I started this blog. The intro made me shudder; can we say DISFUNCTIONAL relationship people? The thing that scares me is that people are watching this, thinking this is normal. THIS IS NOT AN EXAMPLE OF A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP. Constant yelling and fighting is not a healthy relationship. Swearing at each other is not a healthy relationship. Threatening to leave someone is not a healthy relationship. Having to beg someone to not leave you means it is not a healthy relationship. I think this fight is happening on the wedding night based on the fact he's in a tux and she is wearing a horrible looking wedding dress.

Music videos are mostly lies and rarely reflect any truths about life. Sadly people think that they do.

Oh and the song is boring.

Scary! We R Who We R

Ke$ha, get a new make up artist NOW! You are not Lady Gaga.

Sincerely,
Real Life Dis-Function

Example of a Bad video...

Oh Kesha where do we start... oops sorry, Ke$ha. We have to get this right as I'm sure there was a lot of money paid by the record company to come up with that one. It also seems quite fitting as her career is an obvious record company money grab...

So you have a problem with alcholism and you are proud to be a bit of a skank but come one! You're old enough to be still living at home and your proud of this? We're off to a very bad start...

Suprise, suprise upperr middle class white girl... she really needs to move out of mommy and daddy's and then she's be able to appreciate that tub more!

Oh now she is teaching all the young boys that unsolicited groping is okay!

Didn't Brittney spin around a pole in a fur vest in one of her videos?

And what's her thing with creepy older men? Mick Jagger? Ewwww. Sure he's made some great music but the guy is a wrinkled old Elf. A girlfriend of mine was sitting a few seats away from him at Wicked in London and apparently he's something like 5' 2"! Not an attractive mini man.

See Ke$ha! That's a real life tub. Appreciate what you've got, including siblings, both parents together and someone makes you breakfast!
