Suprised?

I like this video. Great choreography and original. I'm indifferent to the song and don't really know much about the Beibers music. Usher is okay, but I don't get why everyone things he's good looking! He may be smooth, but not a looker. By the way Beibs you do have someone to love. She's your mother, you're a kid, stick with that for now.

My favorite Song and Video of the Year!

After that last post we need a good video! For your viewing pleasure... pure awesomeness...

Year End List!

It's the last day of the year and so let's all jump on the band wagon! Here's my list of....

THE TOP 5 VIDEOS I WISH I HAD NEVER SEEN!
(aka I'll never get that time back/ my eyes are bleeding)

In no particular order....

1. Katy Perry California Girls
Making yourself FASO is not okay. The song is silly and shooting whipped cream from your bra is lame and tacky.

2. Lady Gaga Alejandro
Odd and Boring, now that's talent! The song is a super lame rip off of Maddona's La Lisa Bonita.

3. Faber Drive The Payoff
Oh look another pop punk band railing against "the man". Gee I wonder what happen to all the original punks? Like the original hippies they are now the man. It's called the circle of life little boys.

4. Katy Perry Teenage Dreams
Oh, how old are you again Katy; 26? Yes selling a unrealistic and ridiculous fantasy back to teenagers. No teenager looks like that, and being 16 and behaving like that is a bad idea. Kids be kids as long as you can! You only get to do it once. Being an adult is not far behind and lasts the rest of your life.

5. Enirque Iglesias I like it
Really, as soon as I saw those kids from the Jersey Shore I stopped watching.

I was going to make this a top 10 list, but I go bored. Lucky for Katy Perry!

What the!?!

Muse is a great band; this is a great song, this video is wack. I can say this because I was around when wack first became slang. It is very salvageable. Lose the dancer in her weird costume and inexplicably dirty running shoes and ditch the full screen shots of the words and you have a decent video. While you're at it, fire the overpaid director. Not memorable, but not the strangely embarrassing art project they have now.

Two words: Cheap models.

I love this song but not so much the video. It has two redeeming factors, two FASO's (females as sexual object) and too many Hip Hop cliche's. Ugh. The only kudos it gets is for the random alien in the background... still love the song though....

Moist

This is a good Canadian video. Marinas Trench and Shawn Desman annoyed me so much I had to prove that we do make good videos...

Bored!

Overwrought song, and overspent on lame-o video. Oh look at the tough guys coming! Ha ha everyone is so pretentious, especially with the break in the song to play out the badly scripted Drama. None of these people look at all convincing in their roles, and certainly not tough. They are all a bunch of kids? Maybe this is the High School cafeteria on a fancy dress up day?  Ah good old Canadians, we used to make good videos. The best part is when a girl sitting at one of the tables half-heartedly hands the hero a bottle. I've always wanted to get one of those special break away glass bottles and give it a try..... now that would be a great Christmas present!

Hey, Ho; No FASO!

I love this song, and the video is not bad. I'm really impressed by the fact it's by a Hip Hop artist and there isn't any FASO (Female As Sexual Object); when does that ever happen! I like Vampires and various fairytale type characters, and the choose good actors to play them.  The fashion and styling of this video are cool but Timbaland's clowning is distracting and takes you out of the story. It just feels like it's lacking a little something. Maybe it just needed the mini movie treatment to flesh out the story...

Skeleton dance

I heard this song in a store yesterday. It is such a fantastic song... the video is good too. I think someone once told her to imagine people naked while public speaking and she took it a bit too far...

Money Doesn't Equal Creativity.

It doesn't take money to make a great video. There are so many examples of great low budget videos but here are 2 of my favorites.

The first is a cover of "Running Up That Hill" by Placebo. The song is beautiful, haunting and sexy; it sticks in your head and the video does the same. There are a few different videos for this song, this one is a compilation of clips sent in from fans of them lip syncing along to the song. These are some very creative people, with great ideas and a strong visual style.

This second video is to a fantastic song by Dan Le Sac Vs Scoobius Pip. Clever, clever, clever. Just like their lyrics. My favorite part is the editing of the "just a band" part on the stairs. I also would have really liked to see him chuck the dictionary off the roof, it's a little distracting how he gets rid of it and would keep with the theme established at the beginning. This is not the best audio version though. the single version of this song has so much more passion in it.

Not again...

I have never seen this video. I don't have to; I've seen enough clips over the year to know it is bad. I can't believe she is going the bad girl route. Seriously! Can you be even more cliche Miley! Did someone tell you if you become a cliche of a cliche it makes it cool again? This is not reverse psychology honey. This is lameness. I'm going to guess... reveling clothing? Scandalous dance moves? Implied lesbianism? I'm sure it's all there. Girls, don't try this at home. It's lame.

Wait isn't that... or is he...

Okay is it just me, or does Mr. Desman look just like that actor from Fantastic 4... gotta google it... Chris Evans. I mean exactly. I find it a bit disconcerting because I find Chris Evans attractive but his doppleganers  music, videos and personality are so BAD! So really this review is just one of so many that could be done on the horror that are Shawn Desman videos...

First off, teacher fantasy? Dude is waaay to old to be in high school, but sadly his imagination hasn't expanded since then. Here comes the obligatory female as a sexual object. I think I should start a rating system based on how long it takes for the FASO to show up.... 17 seconds!

This video just goes through is other strange high school fantasys. Most people find life much more interesting after high school but apparently Desman boy has some issues to resolve. So does the stylist on this video. Girlie shoulder bling, bad hair cuts, overdone tux styling; it makes my eyes bleed, but still does not distract from the generic dance moves. I do love the fantasy of everyone breaking into the same dance moves. It always does give me a glimpse of happiness regardless of how bad the video is. I'm just waiting for the day that happens in my life, and it will.... it will.

Oh cute, it's actually the teachers fantasy! Gag.

Fascinating....

The Killers have made some great video's, but the worst concert I've ever seen was a Killers show. It was the last date of their first world wide arena tour, but even giving them some leeway it was still dismal; they were not ready to play such big venues and couldn't fill the space. So it's funny then that one of the things that draws me into this video is the sense of space. This space is filled both visually and emotionally with colour, movement and texture and in such variety!

I don't know if I would like this song so much if I hadn't first heard it in video form. There's something fascinating about Flowers movement, somewhat formal and theatrical combined with the freedom of movement with the Ariel dancers and the movement of the water and light patterns. It takes you out of real life into a beautiful vague fantasy world, that hints at so much but let's you use your imagination or allows you to get carried away with the simpleness of it all. For though it is absolutely full it is really very simple, and therein lies the beauty of it. It's not telling a story or making any social commentary. It is allowing you to experience artistry and beauty and get caught in a moment. But all this artistry and beauty is so Vegas because it is essentially artificial. The dance, the water, the light, the location is all manipulated by man, rejecting the laws of the natural world.

Growing up in Vegas; Flowers has said, has influenced his music and performance. And I find this video to be a homage to his hometown. It seems to me to have a subtle  Maddona "Vogue" reference in some of his posing, which he does quite well, and the way  he is styled. But one thing always distracts me in this video.... standing in wet shoes would be very uncomfortable!

I object to objectification Gaga.

Telephone is a fantastic song, and there are so many great things about this video, the style, the look of it, the element of ridiculous and my two favorite, the editing and GREAT choreography. But I can not over look the purposeful melding of sex and violence and the objectification of women. Objectifying women is the same thing when it is done by a woman. It is distasteful and not helpful to women anywhere. All she is reinforcing is ridiculous body image and the necessity of women to be sexy to be of value. Not to mention the implied violence and the lesbianism which is just there to titillate and does nothing positive and supportive in that area either.

Sorry Gaga, but besides some fun music and some entertaining outfits you are doing nothing to leave a positive impact in this world. You can talk all you want but with actions like these, your words are lost.

Classics

This video is an example of a Classic. Story line videos are always fun. I love that this one has nothing to do with the song but still captures the moodiness of it. The way that the milk box walks in time to the beat and slightly strangely is very charming. At first he finds friendly people to help him, but alas, his innocence is threatened as he sees milk murder and can carnage! Ultimately he is successful and reunites the lost "boy" (ha ha) with his family. Very few bands and songs can get away with something this cute, but Blur pulls it off. It's because it is well done and oh so random. The hipsters love random!

Uhhhhhh okay...

This video is the reason I started this blog. The intro made me shudder; can we say DISFUNCTIONAL relationship people? The thing that scares me is that people are watching this, thinking this is normal. THIS IS NOT AN EXAMPLE OF A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP. Constant yelling and fighting is not a healthy relationship. Swearing at each other is not a healthy relationship. Threatening to leave someone is not a healthy relationship. Having to beg someone to not leave you means it is not a healthy relationship. I think this fight is happening on the wedding night based on the fact he's in a tux and she is wearing a horrible looking wedding dress.

Music videos are mostly lies and rarely reflect any truths about life. Sadly people think that they do.

Oh and the song is boring.

Brilliant!

Now this is a fantastic video. Dark and moody and a little bit creepy. A low budget video done with style and originality. I'm not sure about the metal diaper, but love the cape. The video has some faint echos of Floria Sigismundis work from the 90's. I should probably check to see if I spelt her name right, but nah, I don't feel like it.

Scary! We R Who We R

Ke$ha, get a new make up artist NOW! You are not Lady Gaga.

Sincerely,
Real Life Dis-Function

Undecided....

This video looks amazing, but it just reeks of pretension and phoniness. Oh little boys and their music videos! I love the guy in the 3 piece suit smoking while fishing, such a poser! But it is a good visually. Though I don't get young people smoking. It's a gross lame habit that will eventually kill you, besides the fact you will be useless when it comes to any kind of real physical exertion.

Then long haired boy sees hot chick and macs out with her against the wall... and then she later does a lap dance for him in the middle of a hallway outside a building? Haven't heard of getting a room? No one else here wants to see you with the girl you paid to make out with you! Nice Try.

Oh look, there's one smoking cigars and playing domino's with the old guys. Isn't he so cool! At this point I'm wondering where the other guitar that was put into the car earlier went. That's a lot of guys and guitars for that car, and they still look like they have a lot of room...

When they try so hard to make a band look cool it makes me laugh. you just know that the record company is really polishing the package, and not so concerned with the music... but I suppose if you're watching the countdown these are the kind of video's you're going to get....

Couldn't resist this parody!

Ahhhh this is funny and really well done!

Example of a Bad video...

Oh Kesha where do we start... oops sorry, Ke$ha. We have to get this right as I'm sure there was a lot of money paid by the record company to come up with that one. It also seems quite fitting as her career is an obvious record company money grab...

So you have a problem with alcholism and you are proud to be a bit of a skank but come one! You're old enough to be still living at home and your proud of this? We're off to a very bad start...

Suprise, suprise upperr middle class white girl... she really needs to move out of mommy and daddy's and then she's be able to appreciate that tub more!

Oh now she is teaching all the young boys that unsolicited groping is okay!

Didn't Brittney spin around a pole in a fur vest in one of her videos?

And what's her thing with creepy older men? Mick Jagger? Ewwww. Sure he's made some great music but the guy is a wrinkled old Elf. A girlfriend of mine was sitting a few seats away from him at Wicked in London and apparently he's something like 5' 2"! Not an attractive mini man.

See Ke$ha! That's a real life tub. Appreciate what you've got, including siblings, both parents together and someone makes you breakfast!

Example of a good video...

This is a great video. Clever, well done, doesn't take itself too seriously with a decent social commentary in the song.

I love music Videos!

So I've never blogged before, but I've always had a burning desire to comment on music videos. There are some great ones and it can be such a fantastic art form, but let's be honest. Most of them are ridiculous! So here I will vent, commend and laugh at the various efforts in the music video medium!
